Ground off the film side off Rango
A couple weeks back, Paramount Pictures released a teaser trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski’s computer animated feature film Rango.Well actually, the teaser trailer wasn’t really a trailer at all — it was actually a video announcement piece for the website - RangoMovie.com. The website featured the same open road location seen in the announcement piece, with not much else (but did reveal some of the film’s characters). But it wasn’t until yesterday that we got a look at the film’s title character - Rango.
Today the first “real” trailer has been revealed online. It seems really strange by oddly entertaining. Watch it after the jump. And PLEASE, leave your thoughts in the comments below.
Watch the trailer in high definition on Apple.
Based on an original idea by Verbinski, Rango is scripted by The Aviator scribe John Logan. Johnny Depp stars as an Hawaiian-shirt-wearing “chameleon with an identity crisis.” Previous information has stated that Rango is ”a oddly charismatic household pet that goes on an adventure to discover its true self.” The movie co-stars Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone, and Timothy Olyphant as The Spirit of the West.
But the most interesting thing about this new project is that Industrial Light & Magic will be doing the animation using “cutting edge techniques” that Verbinski has said, “will allow us to capture and translate every aspect of Johnnyâs performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature.” Basically it sounds like Verbinski has gone the way of Robert Zemeckis.
Rango it set to hit theaters on March 18th 2011.

The Vinylprinzessin by Yvonne prince
Title: The Vinyl PrincessAuthor: Yvonne PrinzPublisher/ Release Date: HarperTeen (December 22, 2009)# of Pages (Hardcover): 320MSRP (Hardcover): $16.99Summary (courtesy of Amazon): Summer is here, and 16-year-old Allie, a self-professed music geek, is exactly where she wants to be: working full-time at Berkeleyâs ultra-cool Bob and Bob Records. There, Allie can spend her days bantering with the street people, talking the talk with the staff, shepherding the uncool bridge-and-tunnel shoppers, all the while blissfully surrounded by music, music, music. Itâs the perfect setup for her to develop her secret identity as The Vinyl Princess, author of both a brand-new zine and blog. From the safety of her favourite place on earth, Allie is poised to have it all: love, music a! nd blogging. Her mother, though, is actually the one getting the dates, and business at Allieâs beloved record store is becoming dangerously slowâ"not to mention that there have been a string of robberies in the neighbourhood. At least her blog seems to be gaining interest, one vinyl junkie at a timeâ¦.**********I know it's only about mid-year, but the Vinyl Princess is, hands-down, the best book I've read in 2010. I love everything about it: the characters, the setting, the countless musical references, and most importantly, the subject of vinyl and vinyl culture, and how it needs to be preserved. If we don't, we won't meet people like Allie, our protagonist, who knows everything you could ever want to know about music, looks like, according to her, "the child of Sid Vicious," and considers her thousands of LP's a modest collection- can we really afford to lose awesome people like this?
My favorite thing about this book was the characters. Heavy readers of YA ! chick-lit will recognize the character archetypes: the sharp, ! witty pr otagonist, the lovable (if, at times, ditzy) best friend, the guy who isn't what he seems, and the guy who has been there all along. But they aren't flat stereotypes- Prinz's characters are all painted wonderfully, with their own unique and engaging personalities. And side characters are cast aside and treated as plot devices, either, with each one carefully crafted- even the ones that don't do or say much speak volumes about Allie and her world.
I also loved the setting of Prinz's novel, Telegraph Avenue. Full of more hippies, "bridge-and-tunnel shoppers", and other unconventional populace than you've ever laid eyes on, Telegraph Avenue is a great reflection of the book overall: quirky, funny, and full of surprises.
But my very favorite thing about this book is the way music plays such a big part in it. Good music, too: Just flipping through this book, there's references to everyone from Bob Dylan to the Avett Brothers to the Beatles and Tom Waits and Leonard Co! hen and... *takes a breath* Well, you get the point. Allie basically has the best taste in music ever. If you're an "audiophile", too, you might see references that remind you of an old favorite, and if you're don't know much about music, this book is practically a field guide to records.
Overall, in The Vinyl Princess, we find a funny, true voice that needs to be heard, one speaking out for indie record store culture and for the preservation of vinyl in general. Not only that, but it teaches our generation, living in the age of digital downloading, to love vinyl again. There book shows the beauty of the physical involvement in putting on a record, examining it breathlessly for scratches, and enjoying it like the girl on the cover: the waves of nostalgia, the familiarity of the crackling on a well-worn record. And there's something for everyone in this book: romance, music, fashion, drama, and a little bit of crime mystery, too. Read this book in your attic on an old ! bean bag chair with a stack of carefully selected records, and! enjoy.

The book off the wrestling DEVICEs Iceland off Eli/

June 26, 2010The Book of Eli (2010) ****Directed by The Hughes BrothersShutter Island (2010) ****Directed by Martin ScorseseMy tweets:The Book of Eli (2010)- What a pleasant surprise! One of the more satisfying popcorn movies I've seen. **** out of 5Shutter Island (2010)- Saw the twist coming, but still I was satisfied by this atmospheric mystery/thriller. **** out of 5Other thoughts:Both The Book of Eli and Shutter Islands have a surprise tw! ist which almost requires the viewer to go back a second time and watch the films to see how the twists are foreshadowed and incorporated. The Book of Eli's twist caught me completely by surprise; Shutter Island's did not. Yet, the two twists in the two films are not equal in importance to the films' overall stories. The Book of Eli, unlike Shutter Island, is not ultimately about the surprise. The Book of Eli's main intention is to tell a story of a post-apocalyptic drifter's reliance on his faith in the Bible. On the other hand, everything in Shutter Island leads up to that moment when the rug is pulled out from under the viewer. Once all of the truths are revealed in an admittedly corny manner, the stakes shift completely, leading up to one of the smartest final scenes of the past few years.Overall, I really like both films. The Book of Eli is a straightforward thriller with such clear cut character motivations that one doesn't really need to rewatch the film for any nuan! ce. Yet, it's a really well told tale. Its dank atmosphere pac! ks a pun ch, and Denzel Washington's performance, as usual, is solid and charismatic. Few actors can carry a film as comprehensively as Washington. Gary Oldman's a lot of fun to watch chewing the scenery as the two-dimensionally evil Carnegie, a superficially religious man who wants to use the potential within the Bible to gather people under his authority so he can acquire unlimited power. It's not perfect. Again, The Book of Eli is a bit shallow, and Mila Kunis' performance as a young woman desperate to escape the hellish life she leads doesn't work at all. Instead of desperation, Kunis plays her character with snotty irritation. The Book of Eli is a popcorn film with a surprisingly and refreshingly pro-religious bent, and as such, it works quite well.Shutter Island, unlike The Book of Eli, could have been a masterpiece, even better than Scorsese's ultimate final product. That being said, this is a truly stylish and chilling psychological thriller, with individual moments of true g! reatness. Leo DiCaprio, by minute thirty, gives one hell of a good performance. Too often, I find him completely unbelievable for the first act of almost every film I've seen him in. Yet, he really immerses himself in his characters, and by the end of many of his roles, he's completely believable and really impressive.Scorsese's movie making, while enjoyable and endlessly interesting, perhaps helped give away the twist considering that at no point do we feel like we're watching reality play out as such. Something's not right at Shutter Island, and more and more the viewer starts to feel like it has nothing to do with the investigation into the disappearance of a patient. There are strange cuts and bizarre editing inconsistencies which draw attention to themselves just a bit too much. Still, though, Shutter Island works as a piece of great film making, especially when one doesn't judge it based on the effectiveness of its twist. For a mindless good time, you won't go wrong wi! th The Book of Eli. For a well-constructed good time, despite ! a let do wn or two, you won't go wrong with Shutter Island. Both films help to prove that gimmicks can be a whole lot of fun.All the movie reviews. Magazines off the combat for the battle RK the column 26 June night 2010
In the first fight of the night in the ballroom at the Pinnacle Hotel in North Vancouver, Leemar Halim of Total Kombat Academy went against Vik Johal from the Lionâs Den for a full 3 rounds of kickboxing. The first found was fast paced and the next were more paced. In a fight with flying mouthguards and high kicks, the judges scored it close enough (28-28, 28-28, 29-27) to be declared a draw. Halim was the more composed fighter of the two 135 pounders it seemed.
A very impressive mma match featured lightweight Daniel Waterfall of Team Aikki in Chilliwack who is coached by Sean O’Halleran, a very good Jiu-Jitsu coach. He was against Mason Fehr from FAIRN Ultimate Fighting in Burnaby. Waterfall won convincingly by ref stoppage 1st round TKO at 2:29. Waterfall went for shoot right away, dominated, pushed into the corner, was still kicking after fighters were brought up, kept pressure on until the end where he could mount and pummel.
Joe Halfar from Posenerâs and Houtan Ali Koshani KB-ONE were in a 155lb Muay Thai match in the third fight. This evenly matched fight went the distance but Joe showed he was winning it mentally with a front kick knock down in the dying seconds of round 2. The judges, however, had trouble with their decision and finally settled on a split decision for Joe.
Aaron Shin of Revolution Fight Team Langley, was set against Sparky Makrenko Wuji Systems for a lightweight MMA fight. Shin would win by TKO in the first round by way of a solid knee strike, having already delivered several strikes that way, lots of boxing and scrambles to the ground and back to their feet.
Brandon Babet of TeamHavok from Kelowna, BC was paired up wi th Brian Rudd of ITK in North Van for a 165lb Kickboxing match. By end of round 2 you could see that Rudd was gassed and from then on, Babet struck at will and achieved a knock down in round 3 with a combination spinning back kick. Soon after, the ref called the fight.
Carlson Gracie MMA would dominate the next two fights. In the lightweight class, Olivier Vajda took on Adam Saad of Team Aikki wth a quick superior attack that enabled a end by guillotine at 58 seconds of the first round.
Bryce Gougeon of the same team was up against Rami Kadi of Wolf’s den for a welterweight MMA match. Kadi looked disappointed with his loss by TKO in the first round. Gougeon took control, was agressive, and had several flurries of striking on the ground to cause the referee to intervene and call and end to the fight.
190 pounders Nygel Yargeau of Pure Self Defence in Campbell River and Mathew Vogleri of Total Kombat Academy in New Westminster squared off for a kickboxing fight. Yargeau was a totally solid and fluid fighter and delivered some stunning blows body shots in a mostly boxing fight. Volgeri turned his back too often and knew he was outclassed in the ring and wisely threw in the towel after round 2.
A first round ground and pound TKO was how the middleweight MMA fight between Dave Ferguson from Revolution Fight Team and Jacob Tournour would end up. Ferguson was persistent, kept attempting takedowns off the top. Tournour was able to get back to his feet, but eventually something worked and Ferguson put a quick end to the fight by referee stoppage.
Two heavyweight guys weighing in at around 260 lbs would face off for a kickboxing match. Clay Berg of Comox Valley MMA would win by unanimous judges decision against Curtis Baker of Wolf’s Den. Despite Baker rallying in the third, it would not be enough to even out the judges score at the end.
Chase Ingalls of Pure Self Defence in Campbell River, BC was matched against an impressively trim and fit Karim Pahalloo Lionâs Den for a 165 lb Muay Thai match. The judges handed Chase Ingalls a unanimous decision in well matched fight Ingalls was very effective at pre-empting Pahaloo’s attacks, and appeared better at fighting at multiple levels.
The main event put up Adam Santos of Morganti Ju-Jitsu from Richmond against Team Denarius fighter Neil Menard for a heavyweight MMA fight. Santos was declared the winner by referee stoppage in the first round. Menard had slipped and was in trouble on the ground, but the referee intervened before Menard had lost the fight completely. Menard could clearly be seen pushing the referee off to continue the fight but by that moment it had been effectively called. Menard’s corner was furious and indeed most people in the room would not agree with the stoppage. However, that is how the fight got called and after a great deal of dissatisfaction between all the parties, the referee raised Santos’ hand in victory. It is probably the worst possible outcome for a fight when a referee calls it before its done. There is also no way that I have heard of where a bad call of a referee can be overruled in a match.
