Local MMA fans came to the Red Robinson Theatre in Coquitlam for Extreme MMA 3 â" The BC Championships. Although several of the fighters on the card had appeared at Extreme MMA 2, there would still be a few surprises in the evening. The CACSC fight night is a series of elimination bouts, with 13 fights on the card in total. The length of fights were staggered according to the size of the division in order to even out the amount of time fighters spend in the ring. Three fighters who got the bye would go the distance through the tournament and win their divisions.
The Extreme MMA series also made use of a 30 second ground rule, where the fighters will be stood up after 30 seconds on the ground to ensure the action keeps going. The ground rule would prolong some of the fights, when fighters had to defend against pummelling from the mount past guard. But the rule likely did not change any of the outcomes of the fights.
The night would see in at least a couple of cases, a much smaller, lighter fighter would be up against a heavier, taller fighter, and they would win by using a combination of pluck and skill.
Jonathan Dubois would have the first, sixth, and last fight of the night, and coming into the welterweight division measuring only 5’5â tall, would be one of the cases of the smaller fighter defeating the larger one. Dubois racked up the takedowns, and also the points. In fight 6, he showed great kicks, slips, and recovery from a body slam. He would not have as good as luck in the last fight against Andrew Uyeno, and went down from a wicked uppercut in the first round.
Danny Doig from Yellowknife was back again, having fought at Extreme MMA 2 earlier this year. Doig had aggressive strikes and fast moves but got into trouble on his back facing the full mount and had to endure fists on at least two occasions.
Dan Carter won by one of the only submissions of the night when he pulled off a tight and technical guillotine to force a tapout at 1:37.
Andrew Uyeno got the by in the Welterweight division and would go on to win the division. Uyeno was a calmer, slower paced fighter that kept range with kicks, and even looked dazed at moments from strikes he would have to take. His patience came around form him when finally a battle off the ropes and corner got Uyeno and Valiquette clinching. Uyeno got Valiquette down with a hard body slam. The fight ended at the same time as referee stoppage, and was then passed to the judges to rule a unanimous decision.
Mike Blumke was another fighter back again from Extreme MMA 2. He had lost his fight by tko in the first minute earlier in the year. This time Blumke fought well and went the distance against Lee Briand. Blumke managed to mount on Briand a couple times and the fighters went through the ropes and onto the tables. Briand would win by 1 point in a split decision.
Herbert Moon and Craig Garriot had fought for the Canadian title in Extreme MMA 2 earlier this year and came back for the BC title. The big guys had an aggressive fight but it would not last long and the ref stopped the fight at 2:10 of the first round.
Also on the card, David Flores vs Chris Everett:
Despite fighting well earlier on, Dan Carter would not survive long against Ross Walker, the bye fighter. Carter looked good and slipped and moved well at the beginning, but had what appeared to be a possible eye injury and then went down quickly.
Brandon Pohynako was another shorter, lighter fighter, and also the bye fighter in for the Lightweight division belt against Rob Woodcock. Pohynako avoided a rear naked choke submission with the 30 second rule, and in general showed great meddle being the smaller fighter, although the fight would be marred toward the end with a groin shot… In the end the judges gave him the win by split decision over Woodcock.
